DSP National Shortage
Direct Support Professionals
Across the United States, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are scarce and in high demand. This impact is profoundly felt by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. DSPs are essential caregivers that support daily living, access to the community, and medical needs. However, there is a National Workforce Crisis driven by low wages, limited resources, and high turnovers.
Current National Issues
-90% of providers are short staffed
-69% of providers are turning away new clients
-40%+ turnover rates are not uncommon
Current Issues in North Carolina
Although more than 14,000 people receive services through Medicaid, over 16,000 remain on a waitlist. DSP wages frequently fall below $15 per hour which is less than many retail and fast-food industry jobs offer. In many cases, families are forced to fill the void of caretaking. This limits their ability to work, increasing financial and emotional stress.
How we help
We are partnering with Smoky Mountain News to raise awareness. In addition to The Smoky Mountain News, we have taken out ads with The Mountaineer. We have reached out to Western Carolina University, local community colleges, and churches to establish training pipelines and promote careers in DSP. HVO offers employment that enables individuals with disabilities through vocational training and community engagement, supporting and encouraging their journey toward independence and success. We are implementing a market adjustment to ensure our pay rates are aligned with current industry standards in our region and have recently raised our entry wage to $18.72. Benefits of HVO include a flexible, no-call, Monday-to-Friday work schedule (8 am-4 pm), health and dental insurance, Supplemental Insurance Policies, Life Insurance, Gym Membership Discounts, Paid Holidays, Paid Time Off, a Retirement Program, full- and part-time options, EAN programs, and Paid Training.
DSPs are essential to our mission! With community-driven support we can build a sustainable care system valuing not only the individuals receiving services but also the professionals that provide them
