Torch Run kicks off Special Olympics Spring Games

Law enforcement officers throughout Haywood County gathered at the Waynesville Police Department Friday morning, struggling to keep warm in the chilly weather as they waited to begin their special run kicking off the county's Special Olympic games.

However, the 1.6 mile Torch Run for Special Olympics finished with a huge, warm reception from the Special Olympics athletes, serving as part of the opening ceremony for the spring games.

This year's Law Enforcement Torch Run route began at the Waynesville Police Department, down South Main Street, left at Walnut Street, down Russ Avenue, right on Howell Mill Road, right on Vance Street concluding at the Waynesville Recreation Center.

The route was changed to one where there is more traffic to increase visibility and awareness of the cause.
